New analyses of data collected by NASA’s New Horizons probe and the Cassini spacecraft reveal a distinct absorption band that does not correspond to any known molecule in existing databases. The signal was identified when researchers re‑examined archived spectra from the 2015 Pluto flyby and the 2009 Titan flyby, noticing a consistent dip at 3.2 micrometers that had been overlooked in earlier analyses.
The unexplained feature appears at wavelengths where methane, nitrogen, and complex organic hazes typically dominate, suggesting the presence of a previously unidentified compound. Laboratory attempts to replicate the signature have so far failed, indicating either an exotic chemical pathway or a novel class of molecules formed under the extreme cold and low‑pressure conditions of the outer solar system.
